New Class: 2012 Summer I
Class Title: Asia Pacific Politics
Summer Term 1: May 16, 2012- Jun 25, 2012
MTuWThF 2:00PM - 3:15PM
Social Sciences 105
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that the 21st century will be the United States' Pacific Century. With rapid economic growth and democratic development, East and Southeast Asia, or Asia-Pacific, is one of the most dynamic regions in the world.
This course will provide a survey of political systems and economies of seven major Asia-Pacific countries—China, Japan, North and South Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
The course will consist of three parts. First, we will explore the origins of the political and economic institutions of the seven Asian countries. We will consider colonial legacies, types of authoritarian regimes, and institutional choices during transitions to democracy. Second, we will discuss the consequences of the different political and economic institutions across the countries. Emphasis will be placed on similarities and differences in the structure and process of the policy making area. Finally, we will discuss the implications for other countries beyond Asia-Pacific.
