Duke Human Rights Archive: Extremist Collections

Assorted printed materials and some manuscript ephemera produced by groups, particularly States' Rights groups, intent on opposing civil rights legislation and desegregation efforts in the Southern United States.

Collection consists of audio cassette tapes, transcripts, notes, photographs, and collected printed materials from Evelyn Rich's doctoral research on Ku Klux Klan ideology, conducted between 1984 and 1986. Contains interviews with Klan leaders and white supremacists David Duke, Don Black, Glen Miller, Stanley McCollum, and others, as well as recordings of rallies and speeches. Also includes documentation of Klan activities and copies of literature published by Invisible Empire, Knights of the KKK; the White Patriot Party; Knights of the KKK; the Populist Party; Mountain Church; NAAWP; Institute for Historical Review; and other white supremacists and white Christian nationalist groups.

The collection contains audiotapes of broadcasts from Radio Télévision Libres des Milles Collines (RTLM) and Radio Rwanda, classified as incitement to genocide.

Collection includes a broad range of Ku Klux Klan pamphlets, flyers, and other ephemera regarding Klan membership, Anglo-American values, protests against African Americans, Communists, or non-Protestant people, and promotional Klan events. Early material highlights activities of the Women of the Klan in Pennsylvania during the 1920s, including their charity work and fundraising for the Klan Haven, an orphanage. This material also includes large panoramic photographs of 1920s Klan reunions. Later materials from the 1960s are largely from the Southeast and mid-Atlantic States, and include literature, flyers, and handouts on Klan history, segregation, school integration, Communism, Catholicism, and Judaism.

This collection consists of printed extremist literature largely produced by American Nazi groups, right-wing white supremacists, and Christian nationalist publishers. The collection's content is largely anti-Semitic, racist, Christian nationalist, and pro-Nazi, dating from the 1970s through the late 1990s. Some exceptions include a small number of pamphlets printed by the Revolutionary Communist Party or Nation of Islam-affiliated groups.
