The Woman's Student Government Association (WSGA), formed in 1918, aimed to preserve student honor, develop self-control, and govern the women students. It established various committees, including social, social service, social standards, and room committees, as well as journal, publicity, and social room committees. The organization continued when the Woman's College was incorporated on East Campus in 1930, a counterpart to Trinity College for men. It provided shared faculty, curriculum, and facilities, while offering women leadership opportunities through their own student government, social standards committees, and judicial board.

In the 1960s, students frequently requested the liberalization of social regulations, particularly those that were traditionally imposed upon women and not on men. This push led to the creation of a unified student government. In 1967, the student body voted to merge the Men's and Woman's Student Government Associations, forming the Associated Students of Duke University (ASDU), which became Duke Student Government in 1993.
