Yasak/Banned: Political Cartoons from Late Ottoman and Republican Turkey, on display 30 October 2017-24 March, 2018 in the Mary Duke Biddle Room of the David M. Rubenstein Library at Duke University. The exhibition showcased the complex history of the Ottoman Empire up to the present Republic of Turkey through the lens of political cartoons. The exhibition also highlighted the significant Ottoman and Turkish collections held at Duke University Libraries.
A conference, YASAK/BANNED: Print Media and Cultural Spaces from Abdülhamid to Erdogan was held in conjunction with the exhibition bringing renowned scholars from North America and Turkey to discuss aspects of the Ottoman Empire and Republic of Turkey. See DUMESC.
In addition to these activities, the Journal of Ottoman and Turkish Studies (JOTSA) had a special issue featuring papers from the conference. JOTSA Vol. 5, No. 2, Fall 2018
