Editor name, editor. Title of Proceedings. Number and name of conference; date of conference; place of conference. Publisher; Year. DOI/URL


Anatomy of a citation
  1. Editor(s): Formatted as last name and initials (no periods) and separated by commas, followed by comma "editor."
  2. Proceedings title: Use sentence case.
  3. Conference information: Begin with the number of the conference using an arabic ordinal number and the title of the conference in title case, followed by a semicolon, the inclusive dates of the conference (year-mo-day format), followed by semicolon, and location of the conference. For a conference in the U.S., Canada, or Australia, add the abbreviated state/province/territory after the city name (can omit country name).

  5. Year of publication
  6. DOI/URL: DOI is preferred, otherwise try to use permalink or stable URL, if applicable.

Anatomy of a citation
  1. Author name(s): Formatted as last name and initials (no periods) and separated by commas. Do not use & or "and" before the last author. For papers with more than 5 authors, list the first author followed by “et al.”
  2. Paper title: Use sentence case.
  3. Content designator: "conference paper" in brackets.
  4. Editor(s): Formatted as last name and initials (no periods) and separated by commas, followed by comma "editor."
  5. Proceedings title: Use sentence case.
  6. Conference information: Begin with the number of the conference using an arabic ordinal number and the title of the conference in title case, followed by a semicolon, the inclusive dates of the conference (year-mo-day format), followed by semicolon, and location of the conference. For a conference in the U.S., Canada, or Australia, add the abbreviated state/province/territory after the city name (can omit country name).

  9. Page numbers: add the letter "p" followed by the inclusive page numbers for the location of the paper within the proceedings.
  10. DOI/URL: DOI is preferred, otherwise try to use permalink or stable URL, if applicable.

Unpublished conference materials

Many times, posters and paper presentations are not formally published. In these cases, use the designations, "Paper presented at" or "Poster session presented at" instead of "In:" to connect author and title information with conference information.
