John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising, and Marketing History

About the Hartman Center

The John W. Hartman Center for Sales, Advertising & Marketing History holds more than 3 million items that document the history of sales, advertising and marketing throughout the past two centuries, including the the following major collecting areas:

  • Advertising cookbooks
  • Advertising agencies
  • Collectors
  • Marketing materials, including direct marketing
  • Outdoor Advertising:
  • Personal papers of individuals who worked in sales, advertising, and marketing
  • Sales and salesmanship literature
  • Tobacco
  • Trade Associations

While the majority of these materials are stored at Duke as original manuscripts, a growing portion of Hartman collections are available digitally through the Duke Digital Repository. This guide highlights our digital collections and points researchers to other potential online resources that may be useful for research and teaching in sales, advertising, and marketing history.
