In this guide you will find some of the most in-demand books from the Divinity School Library's Reference Room, including commentary series, one-volume commentaries, and the series Feasting on the Gospels and Feasting on the WordMany of these books are available online, but for those that are not, the link embedded in the title will take you to the Duke Libraries catalog record. You can use this link to place a scanning request or a request for Library Takeout. You can also search for more sources using the Duke Libraries catalog's Advanced Search option.

Although these commentaries are not available online, you can still request a scan of the pages you would like to consult.

Advanced Search Tips

Use the Duke Libraries catalog Advanced Search feature to find additional biblical commentaries as well as monographs and edited volumes. 

To find commentaries, use this Subject string: 

"Bible. [Book name] -- Commentaries"

To find a monograph or edited volume of essays, use this subject string: 

"Bible. [Book name] -- Criticism, interpretation, etc"

Requesting Materials: Library Takeout and Scanning Requests

To request a circulating copy of a book through Library Takeout, or a scan of the pages you need, use the following steps:

  • Follow the link to the item record and click the green  Request  button
  • Select the blue  Request  button on the following page.
  • You will next be taken to a screen from which you can request the entire book via Library Takeout, or a scan of a section from the book.
  • Simply select  Request  under Library Takeout on the left, or  Request Scan  on the right, and fill in the scripture passage where the form asks for page numbers:
