Beginnings - Reference Sources

Broadest - Always consult

Oxford Art Online - encyclopedia for all of art history.  Search under art historian's name.  Note all the contexts in which the name is set.

Google Scholar - articles.  Search historian's name.  The Google text searches will show only the snippet and context of the historian discussed.  Map that citation back to the Duke catalog and get the full article.  scholar.google.com

Google Books - same as articles (above).  If you're authenticated as a Duke Person, Google will often times tell you if we own the book or not. books.google.com

Getty Research Portal - Getty Research Institute's collection of digitized art history texts.

WBIS - World Biographical Information System (Duke authentication required).  Listing of millions of names from minor and specialty biographical dictionaries of the 19th & 20th centuries.  If a name is found, microfiche, basement, Bostock, will provide the complete snippet.  TO BE DONE FOR EVERY NAME.

Artists' Dictionaries (biographies of Artists)

  • Benezit Dictionary of Artists - All artists of all places and times:  many art historians were also artists or were intimately connnect with artists.  A good source to check
