Story+ at the Rubenstein

(Almost) everything you need to know about doing research at the Rubenstein Library

Reserve a Seat!

  • The reading room is currently limited to 12 researchers at a time
  • For the week of May 16 and May 23, there are 4 seats reserved for Story+ students each day.
  • After that you'll need to reserve a seat for yourself. You can do that here.
  • Please let me know if you have trouble getting a seat in the reading room!

Checking In

  • Ahead of your first visit you'll need to register as a researcher by visiting this page and signing in with your NetID. If you've done research at the Rubenstein before, you don't need to do this.
  • Check in at the front desk if it’s your first time in that day or if you’ve been away from the reading room for a while.
  • To check you in we'll need to see your DukeCard or other ID. On your first visit we’ll take a quick picture of you to add to your account.
  • Masks are currently required in the reading room

What Can I Bring in the Reading Room?

You can bring:

  • Camera
  • Cellphone (set to silent or vibrate)
  • Laptop (without its sleeve or bag)
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Pencils
  • USB drive

We have lockers and locks that you can use to store your other belongings that cannot come into the reading room with you, such as:

  • Bags, purses, and pouches
  • Notebooks, note pads, binders, and folders
  • Drinks (including water bottles)
  • Food
  • Pens

Working in the Reading Room

  • Make sure your hands are clean before you handle materials. There are restrooms down the hall, and a single stall restroom on the lower level.
  • We'll give you one box or one volume at a time. When you're finished, bring it back to the circulation desk and we'll get you another one.
  • Group rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Security cameras monitor the reading room at all times.
  • Staff will ask to inspect anything you brought into the reading room, such as a laptop or notes, as you leave the room.
