ENV 171/ SOCIOL 172: Food and Energy: Ethics

Library guide for resources for Rebecca Dunning's course, spring 2012

Scope

Why do some hunters talk to the animal's spirit after a killing?  Why is vivisection so upsetting to so many of us, even though we depend on the research for medical advancement? What is the function of dietary laws in different religions?

Keeping Kosher

Two Jewish boys watch while a Rabbi slaughters a chicken as they stand over metal bins used for koshering. The ritual, in which it is believed that one transfers one's sins from the past year into a chicken swung over the head, is performed before the Day of Atonement.  The chicken is then slaughtered and given to charity.
