Introduction to NVivo

Overview of basic mechanics of using NVivo to organize and analyze qualitative data.

Create Cases

  • Cases are a special type of code that represents the individuals in your study.
  • For example, for a set of interviews, the interviewees might be cases.  But, any subject that is referred to can also be a case.  In this example, specific places are also treated as cases.  Reviews of an art exhibit might treat the museum in which the exhibit was seen as cases, etc.
  • Clicking a case will display all of the files where the case was coded.
  • Cases can be created manually under the Create tab on the top toolbar.  Then, the file or files must be coded with the associated person's name to connect the case to the file.
  • When importing documents, you can also create a case for each imported file.  This allows similar types of items to be imported at once, while coding each as unique to a research subject.

Case Classification

  • Classifications are the attributes associated with objects in the research.  Both files and cases can be classified.
  • Case classifications store attributes of the research subjects in the project.  In the example above, the characteristics for Barbara are displayed.  Think of these as hierarchically nested nodes under each interviewee.
  • Case classifications can also be imported from a spreadsheet, where each case is a row, and each column is an attribute of the case, including that case's name.  The import wizard will let you define the case names and other attribute names.
