Latin 368s: Martial and Pliny

Introduction

This research guide is designed to help students in Latin 368S: Martial and Pliny create a commentary on a passage of their choice from the works of Martial.

Using Daniel H. Garrison's commentary on Catullus in The Student's Catullus as a model, we will focus on finding scholarly sources which provide context for the chosen passage. The research tools listed on the left are organized by type, but most of them will offer useful references on many different aspects of the text, from prosody, to preferred subjects, and the author's distinctive perspectives on contemporary life.
