Setting up RefWorks

Sign in to RefWorks


Create account
  1. Go to refworks.proquest.com and click Create Account
  2. Fill in your information making sure to use your Duke.edu email address
  3. Once you activate your account (you'll receive an email with a link to complete the registration process), you’ll get access immediately and can get started managing your documents.

For alumni

Every Duke graduate is entitled to one free RefWorks account. 

  1. Log into the Duke Alumni Directory
  2. Select Benefits then Library Resources.
  3. Click the link Instructions for creating an alumni account, located beside the RefWorks icon

Back up your account

  1. Log into your current RefWorks account.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Backup & Restore.
  3. By default, References, Attachments and RSS Feeds are selected for backup. If you do not wish to include your references, attachments and RSS feeds, deselect the appropriate option.
  4. Click Perform Backup
  5. Save the file when prompted. If you are not prompted to save the file, select Click here to save your backup file.
  6. Your file will be saved as a .zip or .rwb file. Do not change the extension of the file.

Move your backed up account to your alumni account

  1. Log in to your new RefWorks alumni account.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Backup & Restore.
  3. Select Restore.
  4. Browse for the appropriate backup file.
  5. Select Include References, Attachments and RSS Feeds, as desired.
  6. Click Perform Restore.
Log in to your new RefWorks alumni account. From the Tools menu, select Backup & Restore. Select Restore. Browse for the appropriate backup file. Select Include References, Attachments and RSS Feeds, as desired Click Perform Restore

Use RefWorks to:

  • create a personal database with unlimited storage online
  • format bibliographies and manuscripts
  • import references directly from multiple databases
  • organize and manage references
  • share references
