Catalogs

1. catalog  Make sure to select the SECOND option "Books and Media" to limit your search to library items.

Subject Headings ("standardized language") is the most comprehensive way to find what you're looking for.  Use the 'two-step process".  1) type your natural language to find ONE book that's relevant.  Then go into the record and click the subject headings assigned to that book; 2) click on those subject headings to find similar material.

Library subject headings for Photography include

  • Photography, Artistic.
  • Images, Photographic.
  • War photography -- United States -- History -- 20th century.
  • New Orleans (La.) -- Pictorial works.  [or any proper noun can be followed by "Pictorial works"]

2. Worldcat - combined catalog of all libraries

Use Worldcat to locate exhibition catalogs and books for interlibrary loan and archives of collections.  There's a "libraries with this item" link that shows NC libraries first.
