About This Guide

Government data is important for research, educational, and personal purposes. As government websites are changing rapidly in the United States, it can be difficult to find data that might have been moved, removed, or otherwise have had access restricted. This guide contains resources to archived government data sets and groups that are performing archiving work for these data.

American University's Government information Data Rescue research guide provides directions for those seeking to participate directly in the retrieval of federal data, as well as websites for those seeking to confirm presently undocumented data redactions.

Center for Data and Visualization Sciences at Duke University

Duke University Libraries supports the Center for Data and Visualization Sciences, which partners with faculty, researchers, and students through consultation, instruction, co-curricular programming, and research assistance at various stages of the research data lifecycle.

If you have a question related to archived or missing data that might impact your research or studies, or other questions related to research data, please reach out to one of the specialists at CDVS. You can visit the office in Perkins Library in room 226, send an email to askdata@duke.edu, or create a consultation appointment with one of the staff. Contact information for individual staff members can be found on the Center for Data and Visualization Sciences website.

You can also learn more about data through the videos and course content available through the Center for Data and Visualization Sciences website.
