Federal documents are among the richest sources for statistics, legislation, Supreme Court decisions, and the like.  The United States Publishing Office is one of the largest publishers in the world. Hardly any aspect of higher education is unaffected by government policy.   Be sure to start with Carson Holloway's exhaustive research guide to United States Federal Documents.   Mark Thomas' guide to the Census is another excellent source of information.
