Charles Dewitt Watts Papers, 1917-2004

Charles Dewitt Watts was the first surgeon of African-American ancestry in North Carolina. He earned his medical degree in 1943 from Howard University. In 1949, he moved to Durham, North Carolina, 1950 and established a clinic to provide access to medical services for the poor. He served as chief of surgery at Durham's Lincoln Hospital and was later one of the key figures in converting it to the Lincoln Community Health Center, a low-priced clinic for the poor. Lincoln Hospital (1901-1976) With original hospital construction financed by the Duke family, Lincoln served as Durham's primarily African American hospital until 1976, when it closed and transferred its inpatient services to Durham County General Hospital.

Founded in 1917, the Daughters of Dorcas club engaged in numerous philanthropic efforts throughout Durham. As construction came to a conclusion, the society furnished a room in Lincoln Hospital and continually provided monetary support for its updates and improvements.

The Negro Braille Magazine was founded in 1952 by Lyda Merrick Moore, daughter of Dr. Aaron McDuffie Moore (co-founder of NC Mutual and Lincoln Hospital in Durham. Lyda, who had a childhood friend, John Carter Washington, who was born deaf and blind, sought to fill a void for African American people who were visually impaired. Lyda served as editor from 1952-1971. The name of the magazine was changed to the Merrick/Washington Magazine for the Blind after it was turned over to the trustees of the Stanford L. Warren Branch Library.

John Merrick, A biographical Sketch by R. McCants Andrews

John Merrick, born into slavery in Clinton North in 1859, went on to become an entrepreneur of various companies from throughout the State. Starting his entrepreneurial pursuits with barbershops in, Durham, Merrick eventually moved on to help found the Merrick-Moore-Spaulding Real Estate Company, The Mechanics and Farmers Bank, and the North Carolina Mutual Company.
