Similar to above, a much larger shapefile from the Prison Policy Initiative with all of the group quarters data and a subset of the race and ethnicity data for those blocks.

Just the geographic layers, with many administrative and Census divisions, including congressional districts, state legislative districts, county boundaries, and state boundaries.

Data curated by the Dept. of Homeland Security, these data show the outline of prison facilities in the US, around 6500 locations of local, county, state, and federal facilities. The attribute data sometimes include capacity or population by facility.

National Historic GIS at the University of Minnesota, which has current data (not just historic) and has a vast array of tabular data (not just GIS layers). The GIS layers and the tabular data must be downloaded as separate files and joined, but the consistent naming of the column headings makes this easy.

A Duke subscription (will route you through Shibboleth). Only tabular data, mostly from Census surveys, which must be joined to GIS layers. The interface is relatively easy to use to create a data extract. Use the Data Download tab to download data, not the Excel tab (which is laid out for presentation only, not for data analysis).
