African American Women's History Resources at Rubenstein Library: Civil War & Reconstruction

Introduction

The Civil War and Reconstruction eras are another collecting strength of the Rubenstein Library. The manuscripts and archives from this period offer a range of obersavations on the lives of African American women during the transition from slavery to freedom. As with the Colonial and Antebellum eras, most collections are authored by white men and women. Some of the themes found throughout these collections period include: locating family members after slavery, relationships between former slaves and masters, the impact of the Freedmen's Bureau in the south, and African American labor.
