Every year the fair hosts a country, region or culture as Guest of Honor (Gastland) – with a large exhibit and events highlighting the history, literature and artistic expressions of that country.
In 2007 the guest was Catalan Culture, in 2009 the guest country will be China. This year (2008) the guest country was Turkey.
I always get the materials for the Guest of Honor on the first day, as they include event notices; these English language publications are hard to come by in print once the fair is over – here are the most important titles from the Turkey exhibit:
- Young Authors from Turkey. – 200 pages of biographies and websites
- Turkish Publishers. – 300 Turkish publishers, including publisher history and field of activities
- An Overview of Turkish Literature. - an essay
- Contemporary Poetry from Turkey.
- Ottoman History. - an annotated bibliography
- Turkish Authors in Translation. - 204 authors
- A Guide to Turkish Literature on the Internet.
- A 200 page program of Guest of Honor fair events that includes descriptions of films, music and literature readings. Some of the events are held in Frankfurt.
