Native American and Indigenous History at Duke

The Cherokee Historical Association's mission is to preserve Cherokee culture and history. They have two cultural attractions: The Oconaluftee Indian Village living history site, and the renowned outdoor drama “Unto These Hills.”

The present population of the Coharie Indian Tribe is located in the southeastern region of the State of North Carolina in the counties of Harnett and Sampson. The Coharies descend from the aboriginal tribe of the Neusiok Indians.

Located in Cherokee, North Carolina, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians were once part of a much larger Cherokee Nation population. The Cherokee Tribe became divided into what is known today as the Cherokee Nation and United Kituwah Band, located in Oklahoma, and the Eastern Band, made up of those who remained and rebuilt within North Carolina’s Qualla Boundary (sometimes called the Cherokee Indian Reservation).

Established in 1975,GNAA is the oldest American Indian urban association in North Carolina and one of the oldest organizations of its kind in the United States. GNAA serves as a resource to all Native American/Indigenous individuals residing in Guilford, Randolph, Rockingham, Alamance , Forsyth, Davie, Davidson, Stokes, Surry, Yadkin, Rowan, and Chatham counties.

The Haliwa-Saponi are Native American Peoples of the North East Piedmont region of the State of North Carolina. The name Haliwa is derived from the two counties of Halifax and Warren, which are the ancestral homelands of the Saponi People dating back to the early 18th Century.

Lumbee Tribal Territory is located in Southeastern North Carolina in Robeson, Hoke, Cumberland, and Scotland Counties. They are the largest tribe east of the Mississippi River, the ninth largest tribe in the United States, and the largest non-reservation tribe in the United States.

The Meherrin Indian Nation, or Kauwets'a·ka (People of the Water), have territories in Hertford, Bertie, Northampton, and Gates counties.

MNAA exists to empower and advocate for the American Indian people residing in Mecklenburg, Union, Gaston, Stanley, Lincoln, Anson, Cabarrus, Rowan, Cleveland and Iredall counties

Located in Cherokee, North Caroline, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian's mission is to preserve and perpetuate the history, culture, and stories of the Cherokee people.

The Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation is a small Indian community located primarily in the old settlement of Little Texas, Pleasant Grove Township, Alamance County, North Carolina.

The Sappony are one of North Carolina's eight state-recognized American Indian tribes. Their traditional homelands are in the High Plains Settlement along the North Carolina - Virginia boundary line and they have inhabited the rolling hills of Person County, NC and Halifax County, VA since the early 1700's.

TNAS was founded in 1984 to provide assistance and support for Native Americans in the Triangle and surrounding area. The organization is the official governing body for the Native American population in the Triangle area, as recognized by the state of North Carolina and the NC Commission of Indian Affairs.

The Waccamaw Siouan Indians are one of eight state-recognized Native American tribes in North Carolina. Located predominantly in the southeastern North Carolina counties of Bladen and Columbus, in the communities of St. James, Buckhead, and Council.
