Survey of developments in the history of Japanese women and a bibliography of English language and Japanese sources.

Brief biographies, interviews, short translations, and lists of selected works of 9 Japanese feminists. The feminists included are: Aoki Yayoi, Ide Sachiko, Kanazumi Fumiko, Kōra Rumiko, Matsui Yayori, Miya Yoshiko, Nakanishi Toyoko, Ochiai Keiko, Saitō Chiyo and Ueno Chizuko. Each of the interviews and translations was sent to the feminist involved for their comment. An extremely useful entry into Japanese feminism. Also available electronically through NetLibrary.

Japan is found in the "developed regions" category rather than in the "asia" category. Although not specific to Japan, this study provides interesting statistical data on population, families, health, education and work. A section on human rights and decision making includes stats on women in government broken down into ministerial and sub-ministerial levels.
