Florence Small Gaynor was the first African American woman to head a major teaching hospital. A registered nurse with a master's degree in public-health administration, she was chosen in February 1971 to be the executive director of Sydenham Hospital in Harlem.

Viewbook shows surgical care and patient services at the "largest privately owned Hospital for Negroes in the State of Georgia," as well as views of the residence and family of Dr. Joseph H. Griffin who founded the institution in 1950.

A Gift of Love: The Negro Braille Magazine Story

Lyda Moore Merrick founded the Negro Braille Magazine (now the Merrick/Washington Magazine for the Blind) in 1951 after setingt up a library club and resource center for blind persons at Stanford L. Warren Library, Durham’s historically black public library. She was the daughter of North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company founder Dr. Aaron Moore and wife of Ed Merrick, son of Mutual founder John Merrick.
