ICPSR, the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research, hosted by the University of Michigan, collects data from individual researchers, polling agencies, and governmental and international agencies. Datasets typically cover long time periods, are available in major statistical formats, and include detailed documentation. A nationally representative survey of adults in the United States conducted since 1972. The GSS collects data on contemporary American society in order to monitor and explain trends in opinions, attitudes and behaviors. The GSS has adapted questions from earlier surveys, thereby allowing researchers to conduct comparisons for up to 80 years. It contains a standard core of demographic, behavioral, and attitudinal questions, plus topics of special interest.

The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) provides these public use datasets on a variety of economic, policy, and social science topics, including labor and compensation, trade, health, vital statistics, education, and more. Data are typically provided in standard statistical formats such as STATA, SAS, and as CSV files.
