Using Primary Sources in the Classroom

We have identified several websites with lesson plans and ideas for how to use original documents such as letters, diaries, and photographs to engage students with historical events and debates.

    Includes rationale for using primary sources, criteria for selecting sources, tips for organizing instruction, and activities using documents.
  • Using Primary Sources (Library of Congress)
    Suggestions for using different types of sources, including objects, photographs, audio, statistics, and personal memorabilia.
  • Teaching with Documents (National Archives)
    Contains reproducible copies of primary documents from the holdings of the National Archives of the United States, teaching activities, and document analysis worksheets.
  • Artifact & Analysis (Smithsonian Institution)
    This site presents a strategy for incorporating historical artifacts and documents into the teaching of U.S. history. Designed as a companion to the Advanced Placement Program U.S. History course, it is also effective in any instructional setting that emphasizes analytical thinking and writing.
