Native American Materials at the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library

Welcome!

This guide is an introduction to sources at the Rubenstein Library related to people indigenous to what is now the United States. Most of the manuscript and print sources represent European and European-American perspectives on their encounters and interactions with American Indians, and call for careful analysis before drawing conclusions about Native American experiences.

This research guide has been arranged chronologically by century. The Rubenstein Library's holdings on American Indian history are strongest for the Southeastern United States, particularly North Carolina, but other regions are also represented, especially in the 19th century.

This guide is by no means comprehensive, and we continue to acquire new material from various periods. To find more print and manuscript items, search the catalog from the Rubenstein Library homepage or search our Collection Guides by keyword. Please contact us if you have questions!
