Catalogues Raisonnés
"All the works of an artist" in a single book.  A scholar or a group of scholars documents every work of an artist's career.  Each work is pictured, with scholarly opinions, provenance (where the work has been), literature about the work, and sales information (when known and disseminatable) .  The first place to start when researching an artist or individual work, especially to trace owners of art works and the number of times a painting has changed hands.

Paintings and sculptures, 1964-1969 : Warhol : the Andy Warhol catalogue raisonne. New York, NY : Phaidon Press, 2004.)  Lilly Locked Stacks N6537.W28 A4 2004a

Newspapers - newspapers are very important for reporting on unusual sales or phenomena in the art market.

Lexis/Nexis Academic - newspaper articles from the late 1980s onward (depending on the newspaper).  Separate search for European dailies is also excellent.

America's Newspapers - search American newspapers by region of the country or individual newspaper.  Frequently more reporting from local newspapers on an issue.
