HISTORY 225K: Globalization, Development, and the Chinese Economy: Annotated Bibliographies

Research guide for Dr. Elise DeVido's DKU course, Fall 2016

What is an Annotated Bibliography?

  • A bibliography is a list of accurate citations for a number of sources on a certain topic.
  • An annotation is a short description and evaluation of a source that helps the reader decide whether or not the source might be useful for their specific research.

What to Include?

  • Good sources! What makes a source good depends on your topic but also on the scholarly value and relevance of the source.
  • A complete citation for each of your sources. Make sure you are using the correct citation style (Chicago) and list them in alphabetical order. Questions? Look on the Citing Sources page on the Research Guide.
  • A annotation for each source.  This includes, in your own words:
    • Summary of the source--What is this source about?
    • Evaluation of the source--How do you know that this source is "good"?
    • Relevance to your topic--Why is this source valuable to your research?
  • Requirements of the assignment.  Read the assignment. Your professor will have specific things they are looking for. Make sure you know what they are. And if you aren't sure, ask your professor.

Examples

Morris, Joyce M.  (1959).  Reading in the primary school: An investigation into standards of reading and their association with primary school characteristics. London: Newnes, for National Foundation for Educational Research.

Report of a large-scale investigation into English children's reading standards, and their relation to conditions such as size of classes, types of organisation and methods of teaching.  Based on enquiries in sixty schools in Kent and covering 8,000 children learning to read English as their mother tongue.  Notable for thoroughness of research techniques.

Graffigna, Guendalina, Chiara Libreri, and Claudio Bosio. "Online Exchanges among Cancer Patients and Caregivers." Qualitative Research in Organizations and Management 7.3 (2012): 323-37. ProQuest. Web. 10 Feb. 2014

This article describes a research project exploring the appropriateness of online forums for cancer patients and various caregivers to communicate and build a network base. The study investigated transcripts of online interactions between healthcare providers and patients, and determined that the Internet is a valuable resource to support networking between patients and caregivers.  This paper will prove particularly useful for my research as a viable research study that supports the formation of online communities and networks for patients receiving healthcare.
