Durham Biographies

The biographies of Durham Citizens are largely confined to newspaper articles although Illustrious citizens have had published biographies.  Collection descriptions of manuscripts in the Duke's Rubenstein Special Collections Library often include authoratative, if brief biographical notations.

There is no authoritative single biography of the progenitor of the Duke family, but a collective biography of the family and a great book is:

George W. Watts

George W Watts was both a businessman and one of Durham's earliest and greatest philanthropists.  This book also covers his descendants who have been important members of the Durham community.   Favored by fortune : George W.
